About Sckalor

Mr. Sckalor is a native Long Islander, having grown up in Massapequa and is a graduate of the Amityville School District.   After high school, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., where, in 1989, he received his B.S. in Physics with minors in Astrophysics and Social Psychology.  He then began his graduate work in Astrophysics at R.P.I. where he was a teaching assistant as well, and after two years, ended his graduate studies to pursue other interests.  During this time in Troy/Albany, New York, he owned and operated a catering business, became active in local and regional theatre, was a museum educator (reptile shows and all!) at a local science museum, temped at various local offices, tutored and did adjunct teaching at local colleges, you name it!

In January 1993, he returned to Long Island to get his teaching certification through Dowling College and was certified to teach secondary Earth Science, Physics and Mathematics by June 1993 after student teaching in Massapequa High School.

While looking for a teaching job, Mr. Sckalor temped some more and became office manager for the food service at S.U.N.Y. Farmingdale and in October 1993, got his first teaching job at Uniondale High School.   He taught Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics and also became the Drama Club Advisor/Director.  He taught there for three years when in April of 1996, he was offered his job at Great Neck South High School.

While on Long Island, Mr. Sckalor continued his theatrical pursuits, performing and directing shows throughout Long Island, Queens and Manhattan.  Mr. Sckalor met his wife while performing opposite her in a production of "Me and My Girl" in August of 1994.  Mr. and Mrs. Sckalor continue to perform today...

Mr. Sckalor "returned" to R.P.I. in the summer of 1998 and received his Masters Degree in Physics Education   ("Computer-Aided Instruction in Relativistic Physics") through the internet.

Mr. Sckalor has served as faculty advisor for the Academic Quiz Bowl, National Science Bowl, JETS, Science Olympiad and the Odyssey of the Mind teams Mr. Sckalor serves on the BRC and BCG committees and is also an active member of the contract improvement and science selection committees.  For the past five years, Mr. Sckalor has traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska and Fort Collins, Colorado each June to take part in the AP physics exam readings as a grader and table leader; an unforgettably rewarding experience.  Mr. Sckalor was also contracted to write questions for the AP Physics Exams.  He hopes to return again this year for another round of readings.

He and his wife had their first child, Emily Rose, in 1999 on December 10 (his wife's birthday), and little sister Molly Rae was born on August 22, 2002.  Their third little girl, Maggie Grace, was born October 4, 2005..
